    What would you do if...

Oops! Indeed I did... I actually tested both live and earth and neutral and earth. @ PrenticeBoyofDerry - I'll organise for that test to be done now.

    What would you do if...

Because, before connecting to the CU, I tested for continuity by connecting live and neutral at the far end of the lighting circuit and checking for continuity at the other end with a multimeter. There is a main earth - the main earth that was originally installed. There is fault protection...

    What would you do if...

@ bernardgreen... I know I have earth continuity all the way to the CU, and I know that under fault conditions the RCD trips. They were. There was no earthing on the lighting circuit. At some point someone had added a horrible metal chandelier to the living room, and a fluorescent tube...

    What would you do if...

It's my home, and yes, there are issues with the wiring which give me reason to think something needs to be done. I had problems with the lighting circuit which I have resolved by replacing everything - new switches, cables, roses and a new junction box to feed the kitchen lights. Obviously...

    What would you do if...

Your reply seems reasonable enough to me, and I'd give it a good, high score if it were down to me. But obviously, I'm not an electrician, so what would I know? :) Obviously I am not considering illegally replacing what looks like a 1980s DIY installation with another DIY installation, and...

    What would you do if...

Quiz... What would you do if you were invited to do some work for a customer, perhaps a PIR, or to change a consumer unit, and you discovered that the householder had made significant changes to their house wiring, for example, removing a ring final and replacing it with a couple of radials...

    SQUIRELLS HAVE EATEN CABLES!

Question: Are Squirrels really well insulated, or are they just hard bastards?

Anyone interested in old colour cable?

If I was going to add a spur to a circuit wired in the old colours and I only had new colours cable available to me, then I imagine it would be reasonable to use that cable. The difference in colours could cause confusion to someone working on the circuit in future, but I am unable to avoid...

    A level and fluorescent tube

35 years ago, they were teaching the physics of fluorescent tubes at 'O' level. I remember because I was there. How times change.

    Anybody help

Windows Movie Maker. I think it's a pre-installed freebie on XP. It's complicated, but WMM is one of the easier tools to use. http://youtu.be/N9x26MA5XsE You'll need to find the clip without subtitles, and then add your own. Removing titles that are already encoded will be a pain.

Telephone lines wiring and broadband issues!!

//www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=1732787#1732787 I did a major purge on my internal wiring a while ago, and am currently synching at 7MB/s. If you connect direct to your test socket, note that it can take a while for the speed to begin to climb.

    energy saving light bulbs

Logic failure, I think. The conclusion you need to draw, based on the premise that appreciation of music does not require you to be a musician, is that you don't need to be a climate scientist to get wet when you stand in the rain, or hot when you stand in the sun. Your ability to appreciate...

    Win 7 Windows Media Player

I dumped the Windows Media Player in favour of Mediaplayer Classic, and I have never looked back. http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/

    energy saving light bulbs

I can't see the problem, to be honest. We have an energy saving bulb in our bathroom/toilet and it's plenty bright enough from the second it is switched on.
