what I would like to do is add my own text ....it has been done numerous occasions but I have not got a clue how to erase thattext and add my own

Windows Movie Maker. I think it's a pre-installed freebie on XP.

It's complicated, but WMM is one of the easier tools to use.

You'll need to find the clip without subtitles, and then add your own. Removing titles that are already encoded will be a pain.
