    If the exist render is pretty sound(not falling off in big sheets) then you could fix an insulated render system over the top google Parex or Primo for more info

    You should be able to render straight on to the exist block work no problem, just make sure (if using sand/cement) that the mix is not too strong for the substrate , if using monocouche, render away

    if you are rendering on to concrete blocks ( which i assume you are) then 4:1: scratch coat with a decent water proofer (sika etc) then top off 6:1:1 sand/cement/lime using a quality plastering sand

    Roughcaster is right in what he say's but do not use pva use an sbr if you need to control suction or stabilise the substrate

    If the existing dash is solid then just render over the top no problem, do not use pva over the existing , if you kneed to slow suction then use sbr , you should have enough of a mechanical key with the exist dash just scrape any loose pebbles off with a shovel and render away , this way would...

    Yes the correct way would be to strip back to the existing studwork replace or install/upgrade any insulation, fix new membrane then ply then building paper or other breathable membrane then s/steel eml apply pricking up coat, scratch coat and then finish render coat , in sand/cement or colour...
