Chimney Stack Support in Loft: Bearing steels on 100mm internal spine wall?

That’s a fair point, and I actually agree with you regarding the main living areas—I do like the character it gives to the room. However, the bedrooms in this house are on the smaller side. The chimney breasts take up prime wall space that makes positioning a bed or wardrobe difficult and all...

Chimney Stack Support in Loft: Bearing steels on 100mm internal spine wall?

That really is music to my ears! relief to know you didn't need a brick pier on the 100mm wall You mentioned using columns rather than beams—was that to keep the steel profile low enough to clear the roof slope? I’m trying to gauge how tight the fit will be at the eaves. Do you remember roughly...

Chimney Stack Support in Loft: Bearing steels on 100mm internal spine wall?

Thanks for the reply, that makes sense regarding the splice plate. Regarding the central spine wall: Yes, it appears to be a load-bearing brick wall that continues vertically through the whole house. I believe the 1st floor joist go into this wall. It runs from the loft, down through 1st floor...

Chimney Stack Support in Loft: Bearing steels on 100mm internal spine wall?

Hi everyone, I’m in the early planning stages of thinking about removing the chimney breasts from the ground and first floor of a semi-detached house. I’m looking for a sanity check on the structural approach before I engage a Structural Engineer and start the Party Wall notices. The...

Flat Roof Overhang and Fascia Board [Drawings]

@Leofric I'd like to do my own drawings if possible, because I'm in no rush for the project, and I have the free time, it's fun and it really is a great learning experience. That does mean I have to do it right, and i'm not one to give up because hesitation is defeat. So could you go over some...

Flat Roof Overhang and Fascia Board [Drawings]

Hi, all Side elevation Rear elevation I have drawn the Fascia board on the Flat Roof level all around. Is this correct? Also most Flat roofs I see don't have an overhang. I have a 250mm overhang, is this ok? Are there restrictions to having one? Does my kerb edge trim and guttering plan...

Correct Flat Roof Joist Sizes [Drawing]

@tony1851 Thanks for the very useful info. I'm from Sheffield so no high snowfall I believe. But using your info, I will be using; C24 170x45 joists at 400mm spacing which allows for 3.81m span. With my span being 3.7m Thanks again.

Correct Flat Roof Joist Sizes [Drawing]

As @noseall said, I wish to insulate the back of the fascia board and soffit to prevent cold spots and condensation. Ah, I see, I was clearly measuring it wrong. Thank you for the correction. So this means that these 170x45 joist are fine to use? Is 0.25 kN/m2 the Imposed Dead Load for a...

Roof Height Limit to Window for PD [Drawings]

@Nakajo Haha, my main reasoning was that I assumed there would be a rule similar to the 45 degree / right to light rule for any window that may become covered/shadowed by new buildings. But I now know there is not, so all good.

Roof Height Limit to Window for PD [Drawings]

@^woody^ I see.(y) The reason for asking was because the proposed extension roof's height could block light to the existing window. But now I go as you suggested and take advantage of the full 4m and ignore the window:)

Roof Height Limit to Window for PD [Drawings]

@catlad The extension's height is OK because the ceiling height is 2.4m. So there's no need to put a new window in the existing building as the extension height can be adjusted. So does the extension have to below the window?
