Thanks Blup. Does it not need to be breathable though?
I stumbled across this - they recommend to use oakum
https://www.heritage-house.org/stuff-about-old-buildings/windows/sealing-around-windows-and-doors.html
I noticed when painting the frames of the original sash windows that there are gaps around the outside of the frames (between the frame and the external brickwork).
The gaps are only 2-3mm and don't let in any draught or wet.
My first instinct was to run some kind of filler around but then I...
Thank you.
It does look rough & gritty - I was presuming that was lime.
I'm not even sure what sort of sand or lime or cement to look far. Is it sharp sand / builders sand?
Are there different types of lime or cement?
It's not a massive area to repoint - Just the odd patch up really.
Hello,
I'm a complete novice about this but I'd like to do some bits of repointing on the wall of my terrace.
I can remember (many years ago) a builder mixed sand, cement & lime for pointing another wall but I can't emember the ratio or how to mix it.
I also have no idea what type of sand (I...
Yes, I saw some kits on Amazon & eBay but not sure what type would work.... I'm worried because with the dark brown shoe polish I tried, it didn't seem to 'hold' the colour, if that makes sense... It just wiped off.
it all started with a cup ring on the arm of the couch. I tried to clean it and the colour started rubbing off.... Next I got some brown shoe polish and this has made it even worse.
I think there must be some sort of cleaning agent in the polish.
Can anyone recommend a colour / dye / renovator?
Thanks guys - I didn't even think about a wet n dry vacuum. I've got an old orange Vax knocking around somewhere that might do the trick. Going to get a dehumidifier too just to help with tthe general dampness.
A these look like they sit quite high off the ground. I was wondering if there is anything that'll just sit on the floor (without the need to dig a sump). Water level is only usually 1-2 inches at worst.
Hope someone can help. My cellar (during very heavy rainstorms) leaks in with 1-2 inches of water on the floor.
Doesn't really do any damage (it's an old victorian cellar - brick walls & quarry tiled floor) and we only store non-damp damageable stuff down there.
Usually a mop & bucket does...
 There are some parts of my hallway where I tried a 7" emulsion brush some years ago - Looked even worse - Brushmarks all over the shop. Those Victorians must have had it down to a fine art.
Help.
Every time I use a roller (emulsion onto walls) I end up with a slightly stippled effect all over. Always had the same problem - Am I doing something wrong? I'd love to achieve a relly flat finish.
I'm using a standard emuslion with a 'woolly' kind of roller, but I seem to get the...
Thanks for the replies.
I'll have a look for that Zinsserr 123 - Trouble with 'excellent stuff' it usually costs a fortune. I've got my whole hall, stairs & landing to do :(
If it's really pricey I might try roughing it up, then priming / undercoating. Guess I can try a small area first...
I need some help here.
I've just moved into an old house & stripped off the aged wallpaper in the hall. I was hoping to paint directly onto the bare walls with a nice flat emulsion, however, now I've stripped the wallpaper it looks like the walls have been painted with some sort of horrible...
