    We are progressing slowly with this using the heat gun, scraper, wire brush and then sanding the aftermath. It's certainly not a quick job. Wee bit worried now with the lead paint concern.     Thanks for the feedback. I agree that hand sanding may be better than machine. I am thinking of replacing my scraper with a wire brush moving forwards as it'll be easier to get into the curvy bits.

    Thanks. I think the original setup confused me. I would have thought Red would be Com and Black would be L1 in the dimmer.

    One of the reds was tucked away the other connected to common. One if the yellows was connected to L1. The other wasn't connected.

    I have attached pic of both the switches. The one that is connected was the switch that was working fine. I have made no changes. The other picture is the bunch of wires I have to connect the replacement switch.
