Thanks for the feedback. I agree that hand sanding may be better than machine. I am thinking of replacing my scraper with a wire brush moving forwards as it'll be easier to get into the curvy bits.

Thanks. I think the original setup confused me. I would have thought Red would be Com and Black would be L1 in the dimmer.

Good afternoon, I am replacing an old dimmer switch with a standard on/off toggle switch. I am slightly confused by what I am seeing. I doesn't take much. Just looking for reassurance. The wiring as it stands currently on the back of the dimmer is: Single black wire - Com Single Red wire - L1...

One of the reds was tucked away the other connected to common. One if the yellows was connected to L1. The other wasn't connected.

Yellow was connected to L1. Red to common.

Not a great pic but that was original switch after being removed from wall.

They were definitely not connected but may well have popped out as I was pulling the switch out.

Apologies. That will be my lack of knowledge of anything electrical.

It contains a single yellow and a single blue wire.

I have attached pic of both the switches. The one that is connected was the switch that was working fine. I have made no changes. The other picture is the bunch of wires I have to connect the replacement switch.

The second red was not connected. The end was cut off and it was tucked away.
