    Singing pipes / water hammer

Boiler has now packed in, so whatever it was it looks like it was more serious than I thought.

    Singing pipes / water hammer

OK, after a lot of messing around with it I've now established that the water hammer and the buzzing pipes are two separate issues. The water hammer I think I can solve with a shock arrester - at the moment the line to the bath is acting as one as I've left it with air in it. No more water...

    Singing pipes / water hammer

I'll check again tonight, but we don't get the loud humming noise when just the cistern alone is filling, only when there is also a tap on. But the noise sounds like it's coming from the toilet/isolator. What we are getting at the moment is water hammer once the toilet has filled, regardless of...

    Singing pipes / water hammer

The valve is this one - http://m.screwfix.com/p/isolating-valve-with-handle-15mm/89226?_bck=1 - so cheap and cheerful I guess. It's fully open. Yes, it's mains fed.

    Singing pipes / water hammer

We have had longstanding issues with water hammer with the pipework in our house, but since I replaced the toilet and fitted a new isolating valve to it we've problems with singing pipes when taps are being used. I've drained the system to try to get some air in any chambers to ease things...

    Core drilling concrete wall

I'm looking to fit a cooker hood in my kitchen & will need to core drill the wall. The wall itself is a fairly loose concrete aggregate, but from working on the same wall upstairs I know there's at least one precast pillar embedded in it, which I'm assuming is steel reinforced. Clearly I...

How best to attach UPVC door trim?

Cheers - sealant it is. Just have to wait for a break in the rain now

How best to attach UPVC door trim?

I've had to remove the external trim from my UPVC kitchen door to replace the sealant which had failed. The old trim (which snapped when getting it off) seemed to be attached by a combination of sealant and a thin line of glue/cement. Can anyone recommend the best way to attach the new trim...

Water running off side of roof onto house

What would be the technical term for the mortar along the gable end of the roof? If I speak to a roofer I'll need to him know what I'm talking about (which would make one of us at least :D) Cheers

Water running off side of roof onto house

After some very heavy rainfall at the weekend I noticed some damp patches on the hallway wall. Looking at the outside of the house, the corner is saturated. I thought it must be a problem with the guttering, but I've had a bloke look at them and they seem fine. He reckons the water is running...

    Shower/sink sealant that works!?

If you're having a big problem with mould you might want to look at improving your ventilation - perhaps by installing a decent extraction fan. I would also look for a mould-resistant sealant rather than the standard stuff - go for one of the name brands rather than the own-brand stuff. More...

    Broken UPVC window slider

Thanks for the advice wms - you're right, they are 13mm stack / 8" length. I've bought a few pairs off ebay (for an extremely reasonable £1.50 each) so I'll be fitting them this weekend.

    Broken UPVC window slider

Cheers. Replacing the hinges sounds like the way to go. I'll measure them up & have a word with one of the local window companies. Thanks :)
