Replacing an old mixer shower, using existing pipework.

I've only just realised there isn't enough clearance on the left for a bar shower, so that's part of my own question answered....!

Replacing an old mixer shower, using existing pipework.

I am replacing an old gravity fed Triton T650 mixer shower. It wouldn’t stop dripping. I was hoping to repair it but having removed it, it doesn’t look repairable. But I haven't done any 'major' plumbing jobs for 25 years, so would appreciate some guidance on replacement options. It is in a...

Triton T650 mixer shower dripping when off

I have a leaking Triton T650 shower mixer unit. It's in a second bathroom on the ground floor so there is no pump and it's used infrequently. For some years now, the unit has been dripping from the shower head. It used to be possible to stop this by turning the unit off really tightly, but now...

Disconnecting external siren of old Wickes wired alarm

That's what I thought, but just to be clear: If it does sound when I disconnect at the control panel and either I re-connect and go up the ladder with it off - which would be preferable - or I don't re-connect and go up the ladder with it sounding, what should I disconnect when I get up there...

Disconnecting external siren of old Wickes wired alarm

Thanks. And if does ring when I disconnect it inside the control panel, what then? Am I right in thinking that it SHOULD ring if the system is operating correctly? And if it doesn't, it means that the battery in the bell box is defunct?

Disconnecting external siren of old Wickes wired alarm

I have a Wickes wired burglar alarm which I fitted many years ago and it's still working. I haven't set it for a while, but its powered up, in day mode. I returned home today to find shards of plastic on my doorstep. One whole side of the external siren box had dropped off. It crumbled in my...

Best mastic to seal around a metal flue, and hopefully brickwork too?

Thanks for that, I'll check it out. The lead is 'wrapped' around the flue pipe, but I have no idea if it is hot at that level (about 4 or 5m above the gas fire).

Best mastic to seal around a metal flue, and hopefully brickwork too?

I have 2 small sources of leaks on my roof and I'm confused by the array of mastics available. Can any recommend a repair mastic most suitable to seal around a stainless steel flue which is flashed with lead? There is also a crack in some rendering nearby letting in water, so if the same...

Can anyone identify this (washing machine?) part?!

Thank you both – you sussed it. Panic over!

Can anyone identify this (washing machine?) part?!

Thanks - the image search was a great suggestion, and up came lots of similar objects, but not that one! I don't think it can be any kind of reducer as the central bore is the same size right through it. Perhaps Curry's is an option if no-one else can identify it.

Can anyone identify this (washing machine?) part?!

Hello - I had to do some work around my washing machine (Hoover Dynamic 6+50) and to the waste outlet and hose which meant pulling the machine out of its cupboard. When I eventually got it back in, I discovered this black plastic thingy on the floor, and I have no idea where it came from - the...

Affect on combi boiler of draining down mains supply

Hello I need to turn off my mains water supply and drain down the pipes in order to replace a scale inhibitor cartridge located in the garage where the mains comes in. Will this have any adverse effect on my combi boiler (like requiring it to be re-pressurised)? Thanks.

Boiler thermostats - how exactly do they work?

Nor would I wish to! Point taken. Somewhat different to the old days of wire-brushing the rust off the fins of a cast iron heat exchanger... Sorry, are you saying a scaled heat exchanger may be the problem, or just an additional one (possibly exacerbated by a faulty thermostat)? As I said...

Boiler thermostats - how exactly do they work?

Thanks for your comprehensive reply. You've restored my faith in my own memory. Clearly the Ideal Helpline response to me was not thought through sufficiently. So am I correct in thinking (and recalling) that over an hour you would expect the boiler stat to turn the boiler off and on a few...

Boiler thermostats - how exactly do they work?

Boiler thermostats have been much discussed but I haven't found the precise answer to my query. I know the stat determines the heat of the water flowing out of the boiler. But how? My understanding is that the boiler burners always operate at the same pressure and that different water...
