    RJ45 socket in skirting board?

I know you're not supposed to mount sockets into skirting boards, but does this also apply to low-voltage sockets? There is a blanked-off hole in the skirting board in my office where there was obviously a socket once upon a time, and it would be an ideal place to fix my network connector socket...

Flush valve leaking on new toilet

I've now taken the toilet out again and removed the flush pipe, and and the cistern is leaking merrily. So it appears to be a faulty valve rather than any problem with the positioning of the flush pipe. I've cleaned it thoroughly and can't see any detritus. The link you've given is a useful...

Flush valve leaking on new toilet

It's a cheap Victorian Plumbing one, concealed as I said above. It's a screw fitting but that isn't the issue because as I said there is no external leak. Interestingly the flush pipe being pushed too far in was the first thing I thought of so I loosened it and tried to pull it downwards as far...

Flush valve leaking on new toilet

Flush pipe. There doesn't appear to be any tension on the cable so I don't think that's the problem. I'm thinking that it has to be a faulty valve. Unfortunately owing to circumstances beyond my control I didn't manage to fit the toilet until a year after I bought it so I'm not going to get a...

Flush valve leaking on new toilet

I've just fitted a new toilet, back-to-wall with concealed cistern, but the flush valve is leaking into the pan. There is no external leakage. The leak seems to be quite severe - the cistern empties in about 15-20 minutes. I can't imagine that a brand new cistern would have damaged seals or...

    Toilet output pipe

Many thanks for the replies. The pipe does indeed appear to be 3.5". I wasn't aware of that size - I had it in my head that old lead pipes were 4". I need a short extension from the pan to the outlet and I was originally planning to use a rigid extender cut to the required length. I'm thinking...

    Toilet output pipe

The pipe itself must be lead because it has a bend in it outside the wall, but I did wonder if the flange was cast iron. Unfortunately I've put the old toilet back for the moment so I can't check it. As for the McAlpine socket you mentioned, it says it has a finned connector to a 110mm pipe...

    Toilet output pipe

I'm replacing my toilet. The lead output pipe has a flanged opening - see photo. The flange is too big for a standard pan connector while the main body of the pipe is too small. Also the flange is not very deep, about 25mm. I may replace the pipe at some point but it will be a big job (2ft thick...

    Reducing cistern height

This just says "Cut the flush pipe to the required length", but that probably just means the horizontal section as it says length and not height. Alan

    Reducing cistern height

I'm fitting a back-to-wall toilet with concealed cistern. The vertical section of the pipe supplied with the cistern is 160mm. I would ideally like to shorten this to 90mm thus reducing the height difference between cistern and toilet. Is this likely to affect the efficiency of the flush? (I'm...

    Multiple waste pipes

Yes, that's exactly what I would be worried about! I discovered many years ago what an upstairs leak can do to a lath-and-plaster ceiling below... Alan

    Multiple waste pipes

Ah, thanks, that was pretty much the sort of thing I was looking for but I hadn't found it. I think I would still need a new hole in the wall though because I could see that replacing the existing pipe that twists and turns with PVC might be difficult, and drilling through 16" of millstone grit...

    Multiple waste pipes

And feed the three 40mm wastes into it with this perhaps? https://www.screwfix.com/p/floplast-push-fit-4-boss-single-socket-waste-manifold-black-110mm/40832 Alan

    Multiple waste pipes

Yes the stack itself is cast iron, but the pipes running into it are all lead. The stack isn't really in bad condition - just needs a clean and a coat of Hammerite. Alan

    Multiple waste pipes

If it's asbestos it will only be covering the connection between the toilet and the pipe - the pipe itself is lead as it goes through the wall. The connector will be replaced anyway with the toilet, not least because the outlet from the old toilet is about 20mm lower than the pipe so the waste...
