Why is this flank wall so thick?

Thanks for the replies. I don't think it is stone. In the loft I can see that the gable wall is certainly brick and there is a small section on the ground floor that is only 9 inch thick and internally it is painted brick. There is a gap next to the house with a modern development on it. I...

Why is this flank wall so thick?

Hello I design extensions and lofts for a living. Im dealing with a loft conversion on a small two bed, two storey end of terrace. The house was built around 1900. The flank wall is 500mm thick. Any ideas of why this wall is so thick? It is solid both sides so it is not dry lining or external...

Lean to / car port / garage ideas

Do bear in mind that if you attach this to the house you will need building regulation approval inc proper foundations / floor etc. I expect a lot of people don’t do this for lean to type buildings but it is visible from the street so risky to not do this. It also looks like the current...

Electric hob & oven not working

No neutral makes a lot of sense. The light on the cooker point does not come on either so no neutral would also explain that. Those non contact testers are handy but limited. I will get someone round to have a proper look at it. Thanks for the help.

Electric hob & oven not working

Hello Ive just bought a house that was empty for about 10 years. The electric hob and electric oven both do not work. They are both connected to one cooker point. Both cables test live using my non-contact detector pen so I assume the hob and oven are faulty. My question is surely its not...

    Detached Garage Conversion

It needs to be for a purpose incidental to the enjoyment of the house. It is debatable what this includes but most of the councils I work with specifically state that sleeping accommodation in outbuildings is not PD. I haven't tried an appeal but Im sure there is one out there somewhere. I...

    Detached Garage Conversion

You will need planning permission and building regs approval to convert a detached garage into a bedroom. I don't know your local planning policies or where the garage is on your plot but round my way this would be unlikely to be approved. You can normally convert to a home office, gym, garden...

Shaver point causes LED lamps to glow

Its fixed. As Bernard thought, I mistakenly spurred off the light switch cable instead of the lighting circuit as it tested live when the light was off. Strangely it still charged my shaver with no neutral but all sorted now. Many thanks.

Shaver point causes LED lamps to glow

Sorry, I understand now. I will have another look at it. Many thanks

Shaver point causes LED lamps to glow

Thanks for the reply but the wiring should be fine. The lighting circuit was just brown & blue twin & earth. A twin & earth cable was spurred onto it.

Shaver point causes LED lamps to glow

Hello I have added a shaver point in a shower room. I connected it to the lighting circuit over the shower room. Everything works but when the shaver point is in use one or two of the shower room LED downlighters randomly glow. The whole house has LED lamps but this only happens to the bathroom...

Sealing a sandy concrete garage floor

I understand but I think this is more than dusty. Sweep 1sqm of floor with a stiff broom and I have a small pile of yellow sand. I don’t think it’s bound together properly

Sealing a sandy concrete garage floor

Hello Ive got a concrete floor in the garage and its always very dusty. Its basically solid but when I sweep it I get a small pile of soft sand. I assume it wasn't mixed correctly when it went down. Any tips on how best to deal with this. I think its too dusty for floor paint. Thanks
