Thanks so much for confirming my thoughts. I'll order a new element online if I can find it. Just thinking as you mentioned the thermostat - could it be this that is not working, hence the element is over-heating and blowing the RCD? I appreciate your help :lol:

Thank you to everybody who has posted advice. The sockets dried out fine overnight, I put them back together (replaced the fuse just incase) and the circuit all works fine now, with power to the boiler. Now I just have to get the boiler fixed! Thanks, jmh

I've been considering a MagnaClean filter - are they really as good as the publicity suggests. Do I still need to Power Flush the system first, or will the Magna Clean filter suck it all out? Thanks,

And the sytem is pretty bad - I've had 3 (or 4 - I can't remember) new heat exchangers due to crap in the system. I think it definately needs a good flush out. Think it is all sitting in the bottom of the radiators as they seem to be colder at the bottom than the top.
