Sheathing is OSB screwed into place, so easy enough to remove if he wants a look or to make changes. We've already chatted about the structure and I want it done right so I'm not going to be fibbing to him about what's going where.
Cheers
Thanks guys.
It is a new 1mm circuit and an electrician friend is going to check the circuits before wiring up the CU to the house for me and notifying building control. He's been advising but on hols for a bit. Mainly I wanted to check that I can use twin and earth and get the cables in the...
Hi all
I'd be grateful if anyone could let me know if the following circuit looks sensible. Its for a shed/workshop and the aim is to have three lights operated by a single switch in a two-gang box. The other switch operates as power to an external light with PIR built in (not a floodlight...
I've just spoken to a supplier on this and they say the water-based adhesive needs to go onto a porous surface. AFAIK solvent based adhesives would do nasty things to EPS. So the answer is no?
Any advance on no?
Cheers
Kev
Hi there
I'm building a shed/workshop with a gently sloping living roof. I'm imagining the roof build up to be:
- rafters
- 18mm OSB
- 50mm expanded polystyrene
- EDPM liner
etc..
I know there's a water-based adhesive for EDPM so does anyone know if it'll cause any problems for the...
Okay, thanks Alastair - sounds thorough.
So the vapour barrier is non-breathable? (I'll probably have enough visqueen left over on the roll from the dpm - suitable?)
I had hoped that decent cladding + membrane would mean no need for external ply. The vertical thing (not sure if board and...
Hi folks
I have a large double-glazed unit (80x200cm, no frame) left over from patio door replacement that I'd like to use as a window in a shed/workshop I'm building. The most useful guidance I've found so far is this little diagram from David Stiles' Sheds book.
Won't bother with...
Hi all
I'm building a shed/workshop, about 3x4m with a timber frame on top of a layer of concrete blocks. Just wondering about wall construction.
What I'm thinking is:
- 100mm timber frame
- internal plywood/osb boards
- then insulation (perhaps 50mm celotex)
- then a breathable membrane...
Thanks pinenot. I was wondering if using blocks instead of pouring wet concrete would make the job easier. Then considered the depth of digging and the fact that I'd just be using a lot more material and realised it was a stupid idea :)
Hi
I'm aiming to build a shed/workshop about 4x5m with a heavy green roof on a timber frame.
Most advice on foundations I've had ends up with a concrete footing about 100mm thick plus a layer of concrete blocks. The floor is then sand, dpm, and concrete floor poured in the middle.
Just...
Thanks for the various suggestions. Wasn't expecting this to turn into the sustainability debate - maybe that happens everywhere ;)
I did talk to some friends with experience of rammed earth and sunbaked earth bricks. You might be interested in what they're up to:

Okay, thanks guys.
Yes, can see your points on the rot problem. I guess even the best pressure treated stuff will at some point and its not like there's a sensible way to do maintenance on it. (Uncharacteristically dry weather over the last month probably made me forget how much it rains in...
I was thinking 9mm ply internally.
Externally I had in mind simple horizontal overlapping boards (clapboard?) as a friend can source some cedar cheaply. I hadn't really thought of the external cladding as structural though.
Plus, of course, some studwork. Perhaps like this...
Thanks...
Okay, cheers Tony.
Is it compression strength you'd be worried about (solve with massive posts?) or the swaying? I wonder if diagonal bracing could solve that?
