Lifting a old concrete manhole cover

Sounds like a summer job to me. I'd gather my tools and materials, get the cover off and do the necessary repairs in some decent weather. I suppose the biggest problem would be if the cover fell apart, so factor a solution for that in, in adance maybe.

    Mira shower mixer replacement/reinstatement

Hi people. I’ve got an old Mira excel shower mixer that just ain’t working. It looks pretty old and I can’t find a photo of it online to work out the exact version of the model. Ideally, if I was going to replace it, I’d be able to source a Mira mixer with the same centres for the hot and cold...

Lifting a old concrete manhole cover

This cover sounds damned weighty. If you can get a start by getting one end of the cover above surface level, you're already winning. To be honest, I wouldn't attempt it without a lever bar of some sort. I've had an 1.5M chisel and point crow bar all my life and it is a godsend. I've used...

    Ford custom cam box

"engineering vandalism" What, no cam bearing caps and bolts? Flip me, they'd 3D print the entire engine if it was possible to do it in steel and alloy, then tell you you're a bit old school when you beefed about not being able to adjust the valve clearances or even replace a valve (ooh...

    Leaking Cistern

Hi All, thanks again for your help. I thought I’d just do an update about resolving this as I’ve just saved myself £120 odd quid for a new cistern. I eventually took the Cistern off and found there was a crack I just couldn’t see while it was still screwed to the wall. It was the tiniest crack...

    Leaking Cistern

Cheers Madrab. I'll have another close look at it all. Hope it's not the cistern, this one's only about 10 years old and exactly the same as the old one (then made by Shires) and that was about 20 years old when it bit the dust.

    Leaking Cistern

Cheers Wayners. I'll go back to the single rubber washer and give it less spanner then. I've never had as much trouble with stuff like this before, so can't work it out... I'll give it a go.

    Leaking Cistern

Hi All I’ve got an old lever type, dual flush, Dudley cistern and there is a leak around the flush valve back nut. My guess was a problem with the seal washer that goes between the cistern and the base of the flush valve, so took a look at it and it didn’t look too bad, but I still swapped in a...

Worth Taking up Chipboard Panels To Make Improvements While the Carpets are off?

Yup, maybe worth looking at the weight and ridgidity of OSB. Apart from its properties when it comes to moisture (if you get the right stuff) I've found OSB lighter and stronger.

    Making water based gloss work?

Opps, thanks for the tip on additives and sharing your experience with sanding these water based jobs, I feel less like I’m going bonkers now. I thought that buying rubbish would probably just be a false economy but now I’ve got first hand experience of seeing why.

    Making water based gloss work?

A quick FYI for those interested. My test application of B&M Bargains | Turner & Grey Quick Dry Non-Drip Gloss (a week and a half ago) is still so soft you can leave your fingerprint in it. Sticking to the good stuff from now on.
