Mystery Timber (to me anyway)

Everyone’s Pallet theory - cheers all. Re noseall's suggestion, suppose they must use misc species/splitty ungraded HW pallets for heavy stuff like stone then.
Munroast, foreign hardwood pallets - didn't know that. Re the end grain, yes exactly that, they are saw marks and the "rays" you mention sound good for oak - cheers:-). Other end pics attached. The table is a beaut, nice work.

Cheers all for your comments, reckon I'll actually make a leg out of it. Gonna have another dive in that skip for some more bits...

Pallet runner, have around ten from local steel fabricators . Many are hardwood but with defects .
That's interesting. Do your ones have the same channel throughout their length? Hardwood but with defects sounds like they are good enough to be for pallets, but don't cut the mustard for structural or other uses due to warping of splitting etc Damn, am I turning into a wood geek? I just hate the thought of hard wood going into a skip!

I think the channel is for a heavy steel band to sit in, the wood will protect something more delicate from damage when it is secured down on a lorry or ship with steel bands of chains, the channel stops it slipping off

I had a look through my pile of hardwoods today and I have a couple of these with the channel in, not Oak but some sort of tropical hardwood, I won't know how nice it is until i cut it down and push through the planner - it could be beautiful or very boring

al my stuff comes from scrap often out of skips

[a bit more showing off ]
this is my latest, all made from scrap that was heading for firewood or landfill

I think you've cleared up the HW question up then Munroast (et al). Holy moly mate, that table really is the bee's knees. The moon phase one behind it in the making is going to be a stunner. This has got to be the most pleasing form of recycling surely.

After the final sanding etc, what do you put on the wood in terms of lacquer or wax and stuff?
