I've got a solvent collection that I try out on most objects that I need to clean. I always test each solvent on the thing to be cleaned, applying to to a less prominent part of the object in case it melts it or eats into the material its made of before I use it. It's generally suck it and see which cleans best. I'll try and list them from least reactive to most, below.

1) Wasing up liquid/solution with water - washing powder for a fierce/big job
2) Mr Muscle all purpose
3) Cooking oil (weirdly)
4) Paraffin/White spirit (paraffin cracked an old bike helmet visor of mine in the 70's - did not expect that, so be warned)
5) Isopropyl Alcohol
6) Methylated Spirits
7) WD 40
8) Lighter Fuel (petrol)
9) Mr Muscle all purpose (now unavailable AFAIK)
6) Acetone (use with caution)
7) Brake Cleaner Spray (starting to get a bit harsh now, but good for getting the glue off the back of mini trunking)
8) ... You're on your own!
