Hi all - just to close my own thread – all done. It involved a bit of panning with the upright spacing. Had to reduce from 600mm to 550 mm spacing to avoid vertical mortar joins. (and a 2200mm shelf span instead of 2400mm) But in the end happy I could do it! Thanks again for all your help.

Hi Wayners / sparkwright, thanks Yes please, it's a 1980's house. I'll try & test the render hardness. If feels hard then assume sand and cement & any water based masonry paint will be fine. If feels softer then assume silicone & go with something more breathable. Does that sound about...

Hi Tony The black paint is not something I've done myself, and it's been on there for years. Do I try and remove this (advice welcome) and then re-point / repair with lime mortar please? As I said before, I'm new to DIY so advice for dummies greatly appreciated. Cheers M
