Correct please, the uprights have 4 fixing holes.
I *think* I've understood how shims / packers work - they provide a gap to keep the upright plumb & stop distorting.....but hopefully I won't need them.

The black paint is not something I've done myself, and it's been on there for years. Do I try and remove this (advice welcome) and then re-point / repair with lime mortar please?
