    thanks for replies to date! ..there's no slate damage, had an outside inspection, & worked out that it is the rare (but frequent of late) winds blowing in a strange direction & driving rain under the slate through this nail hole, will try some outdoor flat roofing leak treatment (with scrim)...

    Presumably if you know where it is (ish) you have a whole other area to rotavate without trepidation, so marking the suspected area shouldn'y be a problem, also test the suspected area with a fork for depth of pipe to verify. If it's a regular little ryobi type rotavator then you'll be fine...

    definitely agree with jason, ripping out a bit of plasterboard (preferably all of it in your bathroom & replacing it with hardybacker or similar cement waterproof equiv is the sensible thing to do when doing a drastic (read large & complete) overhaul of a bathroom, ..it's cheap enough to factor...
