    Cutting holes in joists

Yeah, I should have clarified that a bit - 60mm in width. But I take your point. I'll do it in two or three holes along the middle. Thanks!

What Size Earth? (and a couple of other questions)

Cool - I will do that then. As for the CU, no, its plastic so I wont be able to terminate the SWA directly to it (as is the swtch fuse). Is there anything you can buy that goes in the meter cabinet that the swa connects to (other than the earth bar or do you just use a gland and use the earth...

    Cutting holes in joists

Hi, I am in the process of moving my (electricity) consumer unit and need to move some of the wiring. The route that I want (or can only) take is through 2 joists. Basically, is it safe to drill a hole using a 50-60mm flat bit through a joist? Will the joist still be strong enough after? (The...

What Size Earth? (and a couple of other questions)

Yeah, I appreciate what you are saying, but there really is no other way :-( Thing is, I've got the switchfuse, I have the new CU, I've put the new meter cabinet on the wall. Everything is prepped, I just need to run a cable now to join the lot up. Either way, though - can I get...

What Size Earth? (and a couple of other questions)

As the meter and the board are currently positioned half way up the staircase (dont ask!! ) I want to move the meter outside leaving me with the cu inside but shifted over a few feet. This means it wont affect the width of the (narrow) staircase like it does currently..... So, will 16...

What Size Earth? (and a couple of other questions)

Thanks for the reply. The EB are moving the meter to where I want it and it will end up being over 3 meters to the CU so I was told I need a switchfuse between the meter and the consumer unit. I wanted to get the cabling in before they arrived. My concern is the cable run from the switchfuse to...

What Size Earth? (and a couple of other questions)

Hi all, The board are coming to move my meter next week and I want to make sure I have all the cabling done before they arrive. Currently I'm on an overhead feed and the earth is via a spike in the ground and then what looks like a 6mm cable to the existing meter. The meter will be moved...

Advice on Cable to use from Meter to CU

Rewirable cartridges (hence me upgrading :-) ) Ok - i'll go the 100A route. So I need a 100A Switched Fuse and the the SWA cable. And I use all three cores for the L,N and E? i.e. I dont need to run any other cables for earth or anything? Thanks VERY much for your help!

Advice on Cable to use from Meter to CU

8 Way consumer unit (but looking to upgrade it to a 11 way in the near future.... 3 x Lighting circuits (with 5A fuses) 1 x small Ring (20A Fuse) 2 x Rings (30A Fuses) 1 x Cooker (30A Fuse) 1 x Immersion Heater (30A Fuse)

Advice on Cable to use from Meter to CU

Thanks for your prompt reply :D The incoming fuse is 100A The tails that currently leave the meter go through an old looking crabtree 500V 60A switch (black bakelite looking if that helps) before going into the CU. I take it I cant (or shouldnt) re-use that and should just get the...

Advice on Cable to use from Meter to CU

Hi all, Just a couple of quick questions if possible.... I have asked Southern Electric to move my meter (from inside to outside) and for this I have purchased a new cabinet. I need to run the cable(s) from the meter to the consumer unit and get an electrician to connect them up on the day...
