Nope, you've just re-enforced my mind :) This is exactly what I think has happened and why it has leaked and why I think the new connector was the solution. This is probably what I will do if the new connector leaks.

The pipe looked in good condition, no marks as far as I could see which suggests to me that the grip ring on the original connector was duff. I'm pretty confident from the responses that it was just a duff connector and replacing it has fixed it.

It's definitely 100% hep as that's how I found out about hep ;) The pipes did have inserts but I have now replaced these inserts along with the connector.

Thanks, I will look into those twist ended straps. Yes, the velux will be letting light into the ground floor... so there will be a ~1m wide gap in the middle, essentially giving me 2 smaller roof storage spaces at either end.

yep 4x1, I understand that I can't just remove these things. I want to replace the one truss bracing that runs close along the centre wall with something stronger i.e. the centre wall by fixing the trusses to it and cross members between each joist/truss which will also act as strap noggins...

You will need >=10mm gap all around the perimeter. The wood can expand in all directions although I think it will expand more in one direction than the other. It's generally a good idea to let your wood acclimatise to your room before laying it. I gave my wood 1 - 2 weeks.

All I can go by is my own experience and the 10mm gap all around my 3.5m x 4m living room was more than plenty. Maybe I just got lucky ;)
