Radiator fixings thermal bridge leaking into walls ??

I have a small rad in a loft room which is particularly cold - the rad is attached to a wind facing wall that gets deathly cold. So I am thinking that the brackets of the rad leak all the heat from the rad into that wall ? Is this a general problem ... do all rads lose large amounts of heat...

Sash Windows : from 2 pane to single pane ???

In the property there are 11 sash windows all with about the same height. The ones I would replace (at the back) would be about 60% the width of the biggest one which sits in the middle of the living room bay. Additionally I could use square weights so I guess its okay, but might add cost. I was...

Sash Windows : from 2 pane to single pane ???

Thanks, thats useful. its a bathroom widow so not so big. Actually whilst doing some repairs I have found that the original counterweights were very under weight (although still worked) ... and replaced them with new ones that exactly matched the sashes. Which actually involved adding some...

Sash Windows : from 2 pane to single pane ???

Hi, I'm considering ordering some slimline 14mm double glazing units and routing some sash windows to fit them in, however each sash has two panes, so routing out the middle bar ... well I think it might break ... not sure of the construction. Is there a good way to do that ? So can I just...

    Why Glass is Green Today

@GhostIntMachine Okay I am not really interested in your political ideas, thanks anyway. You said earlier that cullet (or recycled glass) has no bearing on the green tint, I am not sure why you are still talking about it. The question is still unresolved. If some UK glass brought sand in from...

    Why Glass is Green Today

@GhostIntMachine Thanks for that. However that doesn't really explain everything. Even if they got the sand from Belgium doesn't mean it was any better or worse impurities. I wonder if they simply found a way to use bottle glass for windows and switched it. Lots of my neighbours have spent...

    Why Glass is Green Today

"Low Iron Glass" never existed before 1980 see ngram below. Something happened then, possibly Pilkington found that it could shove in the face of the ignorant consumers chernobyl glass which it could buy for 10 c on the dollar. And in order to do that .... whenever a customer said "why is the...

    Why Glass is Green Today

Hi, I was recently getting some quotes for replacement glass for a window and ... well the default glass has a green tint. Lots of my neighbours had double glazing put in and their windows have that green tint. Not sure what the premium is for glass that is not green. But my windows seem to be...

    Water leak from chimney?

You have the scaffolding .... so just get the garden hose and some bricks. Go up there and put the water on any area that looks dodgy leave for 2 hrs, write some posts of facebook and then go check the damp patch. If it's okay, redirect the hose. Start at the lower end of the slope, if that's...

    Zinc roof minimum fall 1.4 / 1.8 / 2 / 3 ?

Hi. I understand that 25mm seams and 3degs fall are standard on zinc roof. But ... what about with 35mm seams ? Can you then take it down to 2 degs or 1.4 ? Is there a way to calculate all this - the flow rate during downpours and pooling ??? I am thinking that instead of 19mm plywood...

    Flat Roof sheet metal options

Thanks yeah EPDM looks simple. I would round off the edges of the deck joists, and staple a layer of epdm around them so they don't sit directly on the membrane, hopefully that will prevent tearing. Thanks

    Flat Roof sheet metal options

Thanks, will look it up don't know much about epdm. Well as there is a wooden deck ontop and it might move around I would prefer a "permanent" solution. Also zinc looks solid and easy to install, no chemicals, solvents or glues. Not sure if 2 degs with zinc is possible if higher seems lifted...

    Flat Roof sheet metal options

Victorian, it would be 2nd floor level over a 1st floor extension, access is easy as there is a turn in the staircase. Timber deck. Doubling up on the rafters subject to engineers rpt. About 4m on the line of fall. Needs to be as low as possible to prevent overlooking. Modern balconies...

    Flat Roof sheet metal options

Got a 4m x 3m space over an extension thinking about putting a terrace on it, cold roof. Was thinking zinc is a good long term option as it will have a deck on it, but the min fall is 3degs apparently meaning it would be a lot higher than other options. I don't know if there are other options...

    Rust barrier paint ... epoxy-based ?

Hi. Painting the exterior wood on the gable the first thing to go is the the bleed through of rust stains which forces me to repaint sooner than I would like so I am looking at solutions. Taking the rust out is not so easy as it sounds as screw heads often sheer off or cannot be turned with...
