are the taps new? it could be that the cold water is pushing back int the hot pipework due to the pressure difference, therefore affecting the flow and temperature, a non return valve fitted to the hot should remedy this, its a cheap solution and worth ago perhaps?

opening the taps DOES NOT drain your system down!! it is a separate circut of water that is heated through the boiler. You need to find a drain cock for the system this should be at the lowest point in the pipework???? usually i find they have been lost under floors etc ao you can drain it...
i dont think there is a "off the shelf " answer to this i would use soldered fittings and pipe to bridge the gap..... but what ever you do will look crap , lift the floor and bite the bullet!

I have a problem with a new shower tray i am installing.
The wate is directly over a 8 inch joist, to accommodate this i would have to check out a 4x4 portion, which i am not happy to do. How would you more experienced folk overcome this issue?
