sorry for yet more questions. My hot water only heats up when the central heating is running. Will buying a modern controller allow the hot water to heat independently of the heating or is my boiler not capable of doing this?

That's good. Does it make any difference that we don't have a room thermostat at at the moment? Only trv valves on the rads. I am just worried that our boiler won't support adding such a device.
