My boiler is probably the same age as my house (1972) and has a horrible nasty old manual timer connected to it.
The boiler is a Baxi WM 381 RS and the timer is a Randall 103.
Is it possible to replace this timer with a modern thermostat? I am drawn to the next thermostat that has just been released and I can get free installation if I order it this weekend. Is it possible to fit this to such an old boiler? If not is there any other thermostats that will work?

What is a "next thermostat"?

Any standard room thermostat or programmable room thermostat should be able to control your boiler

Any normal room thermostat will do, like Honeywell. Leave the timer if it work ok.

Your boiler is 42 years old, I'm surprised it last that long.

the answer to your question is yes , it can be done no problem

That's good. Does it make any difference that we don't have a room thermostat at at the moment? Only trv valves on the rads. I am just worried that our boiler won't support adding such a device.

sorry for yet more questions. My hot water only heats up when the central heating is running. Will buying a modern controller allow the hot water to heat independently of the heating or is my boiler not capable of doing this?

Your boiler has a simple on/off input. If it recieves 230 volts then it fires up and heats water. It doesn't know what happens to the water beyond this. All the timer does is turn the boiler (and probably a pump) on and off. It is incredibly basic. And you have an inefficient system anyway. You should save the £200 odd you are going to waste on this thermostat and invest it in a new boiler which will heat hot water on demand - much more efficiently.
