    Electric fire

All recent electrics, not worried about that. Most fires I've seen are 2kw and sockets can take up to 3kw. Rarely use the existing gas fire because the central heating is enough, so will probably rarely use this electric one either, just the fire effect. Lots and lots of reasons we want to get...

    Electric fire

Not sure if this is the right forum but posting here as I want to check safety. We're considering replacing our gas inset fire/fire surround with an electric equivalent. Our fireplace used to have a back boiler and gas fire attached. When the back boiler was removed they left the corregated...

    Concealed cistern

Didn't think we needed to get a frame as our toilet will be floor standing and not wall hung? Also does it matter if the cistern is top or bottom fill in terms of isolating the water supply should we need to? Do they have an isolation valve that is separate to the fill inlet?

    New shower

Thank you Swwils for that information. Our regular tiler uses a high street tile shop's waterproof tile board. Whether he uses anything in addition I don't know. We were hoping to get a bathroom fitter who would do it all (plumbing and tiling) but I get the impression they don't want to do a job...

    New shower

Thank you Swwils, that is what I gathered from reading online. Can I ask please what you would recommend for waterproofing our shower area?

    New shower

We've had a few bathroom installers round to give us quotes for installing a bathroom in a new extension. All walls are concrete block with plaster. We intend to have a flush shower tray and the shower is situated in a recess between these concrete and plaster walls (i.e. up one end of the...

    Concealed cistern

We are planning a new bathroom which will have a WC unit with a floor standing back to wall toilet. Just wanted to get opinions on your experience of the most reliable/easiest to get parts for/easiest to repair concealed cistern. WC unit will have a push button flush and as far as I know it will...

    What should we do first?

Leofric, The guy who built my last extension was in his 50's and that was 26 years ago. He's either no longer with us or, not up to the job.

    What should we do first?

Well thank you all for your help. It's awkward asking if people charge for things but at the same time we have to start somewhere. Builders, your clients have to feel they could work with you and trust you in order to consider giving you the job. It's not always about price or getting advice...

    What should we do first?

Well I would certainly keep that helpful builder in mind when choosing one for our extension. A helpful builder is a bonus.

    What should we do first?

Hi all, We are trying to decide whether to extend or not. Obviously the decision will be mostly down to cost (even a rough estimate for now will do), but also on what will be possible in terms of layout (drains & sewers to consider) and what will most likely be allowed by planning. The extension...

    Waterproofing

What is the best way to stop water getting into a single skin concrete block garden shed, which is built on a concrete slab? The outside of the building is pebble dashed but water is travelling through the concrete blocks and pooling on the floor. I have tried painting bitumen 2 feet up the wall...

    Removing vinyl silk over Polytex!!

Hi, Hope you can help. I've spent the last 2 days trying to remove a charming mixture of Khaki vinyl silk which was painted over what looks like Polytex (thin textured Artexy stuff). I managed to get all of it off one wall, but the other wall that I need to do is doing my head in :x I...
