Upgrading a gravity HW + pumped CH system...

Boiler is a thermacon option 60/80 oil fired unit at the moment which we're not really planning on changing any time soon as it's only about 5 years old. Sounds like we'll be doing a pumped y-plan conversion along with upgrading the controls and leaving weather compensation for another day.

Upgrading a gravity HW + pumped CH system...

Certainly interested to look into Weather Compensation - presumably WC can be fitted to an existing boiler by means of a controls upgrade ?

Upgrading a gravity HW + pumped CH system...

Thanks MysteryMan. On this note, any idea why there'd be what looks like a normal motorised valve on the return pipework from the hw cyl...?

Upgrading a gravity HW + pumped CH system...

No NRV's as far as I can determine... it's all on a single channel programmer to at the moment so when the system's on, rads & HW are heated. Doesn't matter about whether it's winter or summer! Also, only one radiator in the property is currently fitted with a TRV - but that's another...

Upgrading a gravity HW + pumped CH system...

Cheers guys - the existing system seems to have a valve on the return but not the flow.... Think I'll be converting it to a pumped Y plan by the sound of things. What's that immortal phrase now... "how hard can it be"....? Thanks for your help!

Upgrading a gravity HW + pumped CH system...

Thanks MysteryMan Assuming 22mm copper usually be fine up to the cylinder converting to Y-plan doesn't look like it'd be particularly difficult. The pump's currently located next to the boiler, which is on the ground floor directly under the cylinder. I guess I could simply cap off the...

Upgrading a gravity HW + pumped CH system...

Thanks for this - very helpful! Are any particular 2-channel programmers generally recommended more than others these days? Not worried about having to make wiring changes if needed - the current wiring is a complete mess & mostly consists of a collection of terminal blocks stuffed into...

Upgrading a gravity HW + pumped CH system...

Sorry, to answer your question there's also a cylinder stat strapped on the side of the cylinder along with a room stat in the hallway away from any rads.

Upgrading a gravity HW + pumped CH system...

I need to check the model number (at work at the moment) but if memory serves correctly the programmer is a Horstmann CentaurPlus C11 or C17. I'm not adverse to looking at converting to fully pumped. Presumably it's generally a little more involved than capping off the 28mm cylinder...

Upgrading a gravity HW + pumped CH system...

Hi, We currently have a gravity HW & pumped CH system using a Thermacon Option 60/80 floor standing oil boiler which is currently setup to always run HW+CH. There's a motorised valve on the return pipework from the HW cylinder to the boiler, but nothing on the CH side. It's around 20-30 years...

    BEKO Washing Machines.

Have to say we've had a Beko dishwasher for just over a year and it's been completely trouble free while doing a great job. As a result we've just bought a Beko washing machine, used probably around 20-30 times so far and no signs of any trouble. Cleans well, seems efficient, good spin, nice &...

Hot water cylinder - leak from top flange?!

It was indeed a shut off valve - and the pipe was the main water take off from the top of the cylinder - ending at a T with the vent pipe going up into the loft and the hot pipework for the house. We've abandoned the idea of repairing the cylinder now as the leak worsened on Sunday, and have...

Hot water cylinder - leak from top flange?!

Now there's an idea.... may dig out the policy in the morning! Norfolk is a little chilly at the moment - also somewhat annoyed to discover that the heating system doesn't have separate loops for h/w & rads so can't run it till this is sorted. That's a problem for another day !!

Hot water cylinder - leak from top flange?!

The fittings aren't loose - don't think they've been touched in about 30 years since the house was built! (we've only had the keys for a couple of months and are doing a bit of a ground to roof refurb before moving in). Will cut away the insulation in the morning and and if it's repairable...

Cheers - we were thinking as much...
