Looking at a loft conversion in a 50/60s bungalow - the joists which would make up the floor are only 4" thick. Is this sufficient (doesn't feel right) and can we jsut screw a 2" piece onto each to strengthen? Then at least we would have space to put insulation - we are thinking of replacing...

I am looking for advice about a possible loft conversion to a 50/60s built bungalow. The beams at the mo which would make up the floor are only 4" thick - can we add on a 2" bit of wood on top? Or is 4" sufficient? And rather than use 100 mm fibreglass can we use 50mm celotex for the same...

I've been quoted from £85 upwards (as i said, for a colour not-quite-right) for the longest piece, 2265 x 20mm. Everyone i've spoken to hassaid the car=paint may not adhere properly, so may peel off. Might have to go with a colour I don't really want.

calorific - did you paint the glass? WHat did you use?

I've been looking for glass splashbacks for a while now, but all the online places I look are either too expensive or can't supply the right colour. I wondered whether i could just get some 6mm toughened glass cut to size and spray the back with car paint (have seen a nice ferrari-red...) and...

Thanks DavidP - fantastic advice. The blog i saw had the worktop cast upside down and they used a mix called geocrete i think, might be american. I'm reasonably happy to make up a form - they used formica for the bottom which gives a shiny finsh. I'd like my worktop to be about 50mm thick...

I went for a Carron 4.7kW RED log-burner for lots of reasons; it didn't need a vent, being under 5kW so no draughty hole in the wall. It is unusual, being red, and it looks fantastic! I've used it lots of times in the last month and absolutely love it.

The render does seem dry and quite sandy - bit too sandy I think. I just wondered if it needed a 'mist' coat like new plaster does?

I was told by building control that cookers/hobs had to have an extractor fan fitted - there is a calculation for the size of room/amount of air displaced, but this may well be just for 'new' kitchens. Phone building control and ask.

I have a new kitchen extension which has a concrete screeded floor which is open to and part of the sitting room,which has a suspended wooden floor. The levels are the same, so what can go underneath floorboards (or engineered wood) as a seamless floor? and how does the new floor go down - glued?

Now my new kitchen extension is finished I have a newly rendered exterior wall. What do I need to do now - do i need to seal it before i paint it with exterior paint?
