Now my new kitchen extension is finished I have a newly rendered exterior wall. What do I need to do now - do i need to seal it before i paint it with exterior paint?

You can use a stabilising solution on it prior to painting if the surface is porous! If the surface is not porous and fully dry it is best then to follow the instructions given with the product you chose to paint with. Normally a two coat application.

The render does seem dry and quite sandy - bit too sandy I think. I just wondered if it needed a 'mist' coat like new plaster does?

If it's sandy I would stabilize it, rather than mist coating!
Then go for a two coat application with a good masonry paint.
