    Sink waste to square hopper.

Hi, I am going to put a sink into my garage for hand washing and general cleaning purposes. There is a square plastic hopper in the floor already and I was wondering if you can get an adapter for sink waste pipes that replaces the plastic grid? My house is an old one with a combined rain and...

    Lime mortar on K rend

Hi John, Thanks for your reply. Yes I have a go with a brush and water, even escalated to a power washer. It is a few marks, notably a handprint and they have set hard. I agree totally that is should be soft but it is just not moving.

    Lime mortar on K rend

Hi, I have recently had the pointing on a sandstone wall done. Unfortunately some of the mortar has marked a nearby new wall which is rendered with K rend. Can I use brick acid to clean it? thanks

    Fruit trees

Thanks guys. Any ideas of variety, I fancy a cherry and I would like some thing that will grow to ~15 feet tall with a spread of about 6 feet. I am in mid Scotland and the patch is well sheltered and gets good sun.

    Fruit trees

Hi, A question about fruit trees. I am thinking about converting my old veg plot into a mini orchard. It is about 6 by 30 feet. I want to plant a couple of fruit trees, possbily an apple and a cherry. I was wondering if I can cover the ground with fabric and the bark chips? Will this harm the...

    cat poo

I have found that human urine is the best deterent for cats. Cheap and in plentiful supply. I found the wife`s was most effective but she complained so much about having to pee in a bucket that I have had to resort to using my own.

    sandstone blocks

Hi, I am looking for a supplier of pink/red sandstone blocks in Scotland. I am looking to rebuild a low garden wall at the front of my house. It looks like the existing blocks are pretty large 600x300x300mm. I am looking for a close match and all I seem to be able to find are small blocks from...

    Becoming a damp proofer!!

Just to be annoying, I work as an industrial chemist, one of the pictures on this website http://www.buildingpreservation.com/ as previously posted is of a gas chromatograph. This is for analysing volatile organics, not inorganic salts. The other picture I think is of an ICP (inductive couple...

    drain snake

I have a blocked outside rain water drain. It is an old fashioned type (sink or cystern?). I am thinking about buying a drain snake, I have seen one for £20. I was wondering how flexible they are? The drain has a small sink with a pipe coming of it with a u bend on it.

    sandstone woes

I plan to coat all the wall and the coping stones in waterseal when it is finished. I need to build up the worn down bit first and I am trying to get it to match in with the rest of the copes. Not sure what weatherstruck pointing is, I rubbed down all the joints to leave the surface of the...

    sandstone woes

I have just repointed my garden wall, 7' high Victorian brick, about 30 yards long. Some task I can tell you. The problem I have now is that there are sandstone coping stones on top of it all. In a few palces they have crumbled away down to a depth of 4-5''. I am trying to restore them and am...

    Thin Sheet Plastic

I have seen plastic shower panels in B&Q which were made to look like tiles. This might do the job.

    Invading cats

I have found that a good way to deter cats is with human urine. I was plagued with cats a while ago and I had heard a story about a guy living in the woods in Canada. He had been bothered by bears stealing food from his camp so he tried marking all the trees around the camp with urine. I thought...
