Hello,

Im planning on building some decking where my shed used to be on the photos. Im thinking of building it to the edge of the existing patio slabs and for it to about 80-100mm in height. What I can't decide is whether I need to install handrails around the edge of the decking. Im planning on putting a patio table and four chairs on the decking. The downside of installing handrails is not only the extra cost but it may make the decking feel cramped if you have four people sitting around a table. The plot is about 2.40m x 2.00m.

So should I install handrails?

Cheers Glyn

its a personal choice, but whenever i design a garden with a deck, i always leave a handrail off unless its a safety necessity. It always closes the are in too much and makes the garden feel cluttered.

Thanks Thermo, I agree that the handrails may make the area too cluttered and closed in especially since there is another larger patio to the left of the proposed decking.

If you are only raising it 10cm, you don't really need handrails to be honest.

If you did want some sort of boarder, you could always put posts with rope, but then I think that looks a bit naff, however some people like it.
