Hiya all

I will try to explain this as best as I can. My friend lives in a three bedroomed house and next door has been converted into two flats. Downstairs is one and upstairs is another.

The problem is this, when the upstairs flat has its gas fire on, it warms the bricks in her sons bedroom which disrupts his sleep. It only warms up three bricks in a row about halfway up the wall where the chimney is.

She has had a builder down to verify that there are no pipes in that section of the wall or anything on her side that could create that level of heat.

Also looked at the plans when the house was converted.

Now my question is this, could the back of a fire cause that type of heat. And what could be done to resolve this.

The only thing I can think of would be the reflective material what you put behind radiators and reverse so the heat bounces back into the wall.

Anyone got any ideas, PLEASE.

Why do three hot bricks disturb anyone's sleep?

I have a whole hot radiator and sleep fine!

Cos thats where his head is and they really are warm. He cant sleep the otherway cos of the light. cant move his bed cos its the only place it will fit.

Sooner or later everything will heat up, but you could try a sheet of ply.

Something is niggling at the back of my mind . A little voice whispering "smoke test smoke test smoke test".

After ruling out all possible problems with a safety aspect, why not construct a headboard with some insulation board?

I thought that the dividing wall between properties was cavity or at least double thickness, so if your wall is getting hot from a gas fire next door, something is very wrong!! - on the other hand it is "free heat"!! ;)

Guess who didn't read the thread properly.

It's the wall behind the fire in the same flat.

Still something very wrong in my opinion.

sounds like a gas fire fitted into an opening that is the chimney in the lads room. gas fire spigot is pointing at the back of the bricks? hard to tell from this distance!

next door's chimney needs smoke bombing to check the products come out of one terminal . if its a rental then you need to contact the landlord.

chimneys do get warm usually but not from next door's appliances.

if it will be a long process you could speed it up by complaining of smells/fumes etc in your house when next door is using the fire.
;)

The upstairs flat has a gas fire and the wall in her sons bedroom gets very hot when it's on.

Next door has converted into flats ,
i would take that as the house the kid is in is standard house and the house next door has been converted .
So wall in kids room should not be getting excessively hot

I would say it's the same flat, her gas fire say in the lounge, and her kid in the bedroom.

three bedroomed house and next door has been converted into two flats

I'm beginning to see what you mean, so it's next doors fire that's heating the wall,
