Hi, My mum has a 3 tier gas cooker with grill and oven underneath the cooker. The grill and oven are fan assisted.

Lately, the OVEN would not fire with the ignition button when cold. It would fire when its hot or warm. She has to resort to using a matchstick or candle or electric lighter to fire it up when cold which is hurting her back.

The grill and 4 gas cookers at the top are running normally.

Can you please advise when I need to do when I visit her next to fix it for her? Does the oven need a good clean with an oven cleaner?

Thanks in advance..

Most likely a worn spark plug or HT lead but could also be a worn oven burner what make and model do you have?

Hi captain,

Thanks for your reply. I am not sure of the make/ model as I think those have been rubbed off by now but I will pull the cooker out and take a good look around.
I will also take a pic if that helps.

Any idea of the cost of spark plug and HT cable? Where do I get these from? I am thinking of giving these a try first.

P.S. Could it be that the oven needs a good clean around the spark plug area?

Possible scenario:-
If she has been using a candle to occasionally light the oven, then that will be the problem.
If wax has dripped onto the burner below the ignition electrode,it won`t light when cold, but will when warm as the wax will melt.
It`s the most likely explanation for the hot/cold problem.

If this is the problem you will need A Gas Safe Engineer with the cooker qualification to repair it.

The clues are all there.....Gas....Oven......match....Lighter.........ignition......BOOM.......See local or maybe national press for details !

Hi macfudd,

Just checked with her, she has NOT used a candle on the cooker. She has used the lighter she says.

I am going there tonight, will get some pics.

Can I try to clean the burner and/ or ignition electrode? Please advise.

Thanks.

Baxmax why do you think lighting a cooker with a match will cause explosion ,there are cookers still sold with no ignition to oven at all and are lit with a match.

OP in theory you could change the electrode/ electrode lead as they are not gas carrying parts but may not solve the problem best get someone out to what maybe a simple matter of adjustment

Hey psarinuk, you might be surprised at how many different things could be the cause of such a small fault.
Get a torch and stick your head in the oven(with the oven turned off)and check the burner below the ignition electrode in case there is anything blocking it.
If it wasn`t wax and it doesn`t appear to be blocked, then I would really get someone in who knows what they`re doing.
