I'm in the process of developing an app whereby tradesmen like yourselves could click a button any time (perhaps after work at 4-5pm) which makes them 'available' for a call out.

The idea is that there aren't any hefty call out fees but you can specify a call out area (say within 10miles from your home) if you'd be up for the extra work at your normal rate.

You can then click it when you don't want to be available for a call anymore that evening. Do you think plumbers would use this to get some extra convenient work when they wanted to?

Thanks, HPD.

yeah I expect a lot of plumbers etc are nackered enough after work but reckon there might be some that would be up for the extra work.

Doesn't sound too bad to me, If you're nakered you turn it off but sometimes I can finish at 2-3 in the afternoon and go home and sit around, same if you fancy abit of Saturday work I suppose, let me know when it's up and running !

Can someone explain why I would need this app?

I already have my phone which I can answer or not.

Normally always answered but then I decide if I should go or not.

The app works in two ways:

1) As a resource for home owners to find nearby tradesmen willing to take on work outside of regular working hours.

2) Provide work for trades who are wanting/willing to tend to calls in the evening.

It doesn't serve as a replacement for your normal daily work but as a resource to offer extra jobs (in the form of evenings) if you wanted them.

So how would homeowners know about it?

I rather see it as a way for third world plumbers to work all night at day rates and undercut my prices!

Hasn't this already been invented? It's called the telephone, more recently updated to a mobile type. If a customer wants a plumber, use it to call them. If the plumber wants the work, they answer, if they don't want the work, they ignore it. Best of all, it's free. Simples

Yeah I can understand people's reluctance to want to work on all night and that's fine! Also the point about people undercutting price but that's really missing the point. As one poster described if you've got a day that ends at 3pm and wouldn't mind being the local plumber that would respond to an evening call then it's a win/win no?

I think it is a good idea and a certain age bracket of the public will embrace it, sadly though the age bracket that will probably welcome it live in the land of txt and think that if they actually talk on the phone the world would end, so you would be better having a function where they can send a txt out rather than actually call someone, when I am arranging appointments for a letting agent I call, no answer,l leave voice mail no response 10 mins later send a txt and they reply straight away
