For years I have put up with a spring loaded pop up basin which gets blocked with soap by its mechanism every few months as I suspect the water flow is too slow due to the gap being too small.

I have tried holding the plastic from underneath and then spinning the plug, also tried holding the plastic and trying to lift the plug but nothing works as the gap remains the same. Also worth noting that actually the plastic core does not spin anyway when the chrome plug is spun. Has anyone got an idea where I am going wrong? Thanks

Trying to adjust something that has no adjustment.[and should need none]

Yes I am starting to think that. The plastic piece underneath is a solid piece of plastic which runs up to the base of the plug hole. The hole in the middle is for the metal pin that moves up and down with the spring loaded chrome plug. Once cleared of soap and gunk it takes around 2 to 3 months to completely block again.

Is it an easy job to replace it with a better design? Would it tap free after undoing the plastic nut seeing it is set in some sort of compound to seal it in place?

Looks like someone has used putty to seal that up, can cause a problem if it's set rock hard.

Large grips and see if that nut will move, if it does then you'll have no issues changing it. If it doesn't then it needs to be cut off. Just remember to clean/scrape all that off the basin before fitting a new waste.
