I'm refurbing the galley kitchen in our Victorian terrace (solid brick walls, no cavity). Three of ceiling joists (which are the floor joists of the bathroom above) need replacing completely (they can't be sistered) but are pocketed into the brick walls on both sides. One of those walls is external (faces into our garden), the other is shared with our neighbour. The span is just over two metres.
I can get the old ones out, but am stuck as to how to get the new ones into the pockets, or whether I should take a different approach. After a lot of searching I seem to have the following options:
1) Cut holes in the external wall and slide the new joists in
2) Slide in to the pockets on the neighbours side, and then just use joist hangers on the side of the external wall. I'm a bit reluctant to so this because the brickwork is obviously old and not the best.
Any advice or suggestions would be very much appreciated!! Thanks
