Hi all
We've got a damp issue because the plasterer used gypsum plaster on a stone/cob wall. The surveyor has said all the plaster should be chipped off and Newton Lathe 805 system put up and reskimmed.
Are there any (cheaper) alternatives to the Newton Lathe 805 system?
Thanks

two problems with your questio.
if you used newton lath where does the moisture in the wall then go?
you mention cob in the walls - best left to local people experienced with cob.

who is the surveyor you mention??

We used a chap from www.dampdetectives.co.uk . He's independant.

In the report he states:
"
Remove the plaster from FFL to ceiling level back to bare masonry, clean down and remove any loose debris. Apply a salt neutraliser direct to the wall. Then install a Newton Lathe 805 system or similar direct to the original wall via plugs, then re-plaster/plasterboard and paint. The Newton Lathe systems allows vapour permeability behind the barrier but provides a sufficient key to re-plaster and re-paint, leaving a damp and salt free surface. This system isn’t classed as tanking and allows the wall a certain amount of vapour dispersement.
The primary purpose of this system is to stop further migration of salt.
Please note that there are plenty of other systems on the market which you could explore to carry out the same function.

He's not got a clue what he's talking about. you don't put 'salt nutraliser' onto cob.

It just needs lime plaster applied. There's nowhere for vapour to go with plasterboard. I'd ask for your money back.
