We are coming to the end of a 6 month refurb of our beloved 200+ year old cottage......front elevation and sides are 1ft+ deep stone and rear elevation is 50ish year old cavity wall, breeze/brick. We are novices in the old home ownership...
Had a damp investigation company come around this week because of a known issue, he confirmed damp areas linked to old, blown render to rear - no worries. BUT! Higlighted unknown potential issues on front of house...lots of +250 readings.
Surveyor indicated concern that both new brick/breeze and old stone walls have been reskimmed throughout with gypsum....he outlined the impermeability of the product and explained why we ought to have had lime plaster.
Now very very concerned that we will have damp issue because of gypsum, esp after surveyor stated best practice is use of lime plaster...
We were away out of the country during the plastering phase and rightly/wrongly assumed the builder would sub-contract and use correct materials.
Spoke to builder who said 'he's never had a problem before when using the gypsum' and 'we won't need to remove it and start again'.
Where do we stand? We don't want a (costly) issue on our hands in time to come and yet the science shows both with thermal imagery and readings that there is damp....
Any advice?!
