How to remove brushed steel rust marks.

I have a brushed steel surround electric fire which has developed rust marks.
Not sure how they came about, but I am would like to know if anybody else has had a similar problem, and if so what is the best way to remove them without damaging the surface.
I have tried a small area using wet and dry and bicarbe of soda but it seems to leave minute scratches.

Used to be a bodge when selling cars with rusty chrome bumpers to clean them with 3 in 1 oil and a bit of scrunched up silver paper, might work if you try it out of sight first, or maybe just the oil with a microfibre cloth.

I have about 3 weeks ago managed to get rid of rust marks on a polished steel fireplace?

Looks as if any sort of abrasive such as even the finest abrasive will scratch.

I work with brushed steel daily, we use black Scotchbright pads to clean and refinish them.
You absolutely MUST go with the grain, do not deviate in angle, best used with a backing pad and gently.

This is also what I use on my fireplace.
 
Try coca cola - it contains phosphoric acid. Might work, might not, but it will do no harm to give it a go.
 
Baking soda mixed with warm water > apply with a toothbrush

Might not work first time but should see some improvements over a couple of applications
