Hello all. My front door has a recessed mat well. It seems to be solid stone. The rest of the ground floor is just normal timber tongue and groove floorboards over joists. House is probably 100ish years old.

Was it normal practice to pour cement into a recessed mat well?

Wondering if I break out the cement what I’ll find... hoping just to find the original floorboards to create a new hatch into the cellar space.

Could actually be real stone (I have seen these in "stone" districts). Ive found that concrete ones quite often have some form of metal or timber surround to the mat to prevent the edges of the concrete spelling or wearing. Even if you get it up you are unlikely to find decent boards beneath it. If there are boards they are likely to be pretty rough - why expend energy and time planning something which will never be seen?
