Hi all

This unit is letting by continuously. Not Niagara, more a constant dribble. I'm no plumber but like to fix things if I can so if anyone can guide me as to doing a repair or replacement I'd be very grateful. Though if you think it needs a plumber just say so.

Many thanks

Charlotte.

It will be the washer in the base damaged/perished/contaminated.
Most of those units come away in a bayonet action (push down and twist right or left till it comes free) giving access to the washer, whether you can get a replacement depends on identifying the maker.
If you can ID these people are good for spares.

Sometimes, just sometimes you can buy time by removing the rubber washer and turning it over.
Best to turn the water off and flush before starting of course. ;)

Hi all, back again.
I removed the unit ('Most of those units come away in a bayonet action.' Thanks Foot print, spot on!) and cleaned the milky gunge off both sides of the rubber. All was well for a bout a week then the dribble came back. I though I'd not cleaned the rubber correctly so I removed the unit again and cleaned the rubber thoroughly. Dribble came back a week later. Looking at the rubber it can't be turned over so is it a new rubber or a new cistern. Apparently, this unit is the second one to be fitted to this toilet in under a year. So the previous owner informed when I phoned them.

Cheers

Thanks Andy, much appreciated. Do these things (seals) pack up on a regular basis. Seems odd that the cistern has had 2 complete units in under a year.

Cheers

AKA Vesper...LOL!

Sadly it is all too common, lots of the units that come with the toilet are produced in the far East and if they can save a couple of Yen on a 1000 washers they will. I suspect they simply loose their flexibility so stop sealing. Another possibility might be if you are in a very hard water area scale may coat the washer or seating.

I have had quite a few that give up after a year or so fortunately as you found replacing is easy, but long term fitting a recognised brand like Fluidmaster or Dudley is a good option.
Unfortunately it looks like you have a close coupled cistern which is a bit of a fiddle to change. The cistern needs to be disconnected from the water supply, wall and pan then the unit swapped and the cistern refitted with a new doughnut washer.

Have a look here if you want to get a bit more hands on(y)

Thanks footprints, have ordered a couple of seals, see how we go.

Cheers

Charlotte.

Thanks footprints for the advice and great video. Thanks Andy for the link to 'fix the bog'. Thanks Nige F for the 'pink'. Now I need to nip over to the Appliance forum as my B****y freezer has decided to play up!
Cheers
