Hi, my dad had some work done to move a light and the lining paper, and other old wall paper underneath, was cut away. He can’t afford a decorator so I was going to attempt to make it look less messy for him.

I don’t want to have to strip the wall, so was wanting to just fill, sand and repaint. I know it won’t be perfect but will look better than now.

My question is what is the best filler for this that sands well? Would it be some sort of drywall compound filler like gyproc easifill?

As above, but make sure the edges of the wallpaper are well stuck down first! (y)

Best thing to do is get a Stanley knife and cut away any lifted edges on the paper. This will give you a nice flat edge to fill to. You can always cut with the Stanley and then wet the paper and it should come off nice and neat!

I agree with the above advice but would add that it would be a good idea to seal the paper near the area to be filled. The water in the filler can sometimes activate the glue under the paper. I would hit the area with a shellac based paint such as Zinsser BIN but it isn't cheap. You could use oil based undercoat but you will need to wait longer before applying the filler.
