We have a brick built washhouse which we use as such. It has power, cold water and drains, but is detached from the house and quite cold at times. It has no regular heating, though we leave a small heater on during the worst of the winter to prevent frost).

I get the impression that applicances in there can get more condensation than in a typical kitchen.

A washing machine repairer once said that if we ever replaced the washer we should choose a pariticular make which was far better for this kind of use. Trouble is I can't remember the make and he's disappeared, and our (Hotpoint) washer's broke again and ready for replacing.

Can anyone recommed a make and/or model for this kind of location? (There are just 2 of us). Or suggest criteria we should use to choose a washer?

I'd be really grateful.

I would recommend a Zanussi, preferably a cold fill only model. These are quite a well made machine and benefit from having a plastic base. In potentially damp places the base is usually the first part to rust but not with the Zanussi.

Go for a Miele W520 or something like it, will cost you a bit extra but they usually come with a guarantee offer (5 or 10 years). Use a cold feed only, as most rated 'A' washer sthese days do. It also has some of the best enamel finish out on the market as well. The Stainless steel is of a high quality and the finish is second to none. Check with you local curry's or have a look on KellKoo.com for some outstanding deals.

And remember you get what ya pay for!!!!!!

We had a hoover washing machine in exactly the same situation for about 12 years. We replaced it 3 years ago with a Tricity Bendix, and have never had a problem with either of them. Both of them we used as cold fill only.
There is some advantage to this really, because apparently the results are better if the clothes are washed in a steadily rising temperature.

We also have a small electric heater with a frost stat, so that it comes on automatically if the temperature drops to freezing point.
