We recently had 2 x Samsung units installed and very pleased we are with them.......heatwaves, pah bring them on :)

What do you gurus recommend we do with them during winter? We have no intention of using them to heat the place (unless the central heating goes south) as gas is much, much cheaper.

I don't really want to turn it off completely between August and May as I suspect that's not going to do the system many favours (thinking cars here where if you don't use it everything starts to fail very quickly).

Any thoughts appreciated.

30p / kWh electric with a COP of say 4 = 7.5p/kWh to heat from ASHP
Gas at 90% efficient is 6.33/0.9 = 7p/kWh

So not a lot cheaper.

{Though efficiencies / COP will change as outside temps drop very low}. My 1000 litres of Kerosene is costing 5.3p/kWh at similar 90% should be cheaper still. But it saves heating rooms we don't use in the shoulder months and the wet UFH takes forever to work. ASHPs take the chills off in minutes. Their use has reduced our kerosene consumption I think. We still use them as aircon in winter if the rooms get too much solar gain for comfort, but not for long or that frequently.

Read the manual and/or ask your installer for specific advice on your installed model(s); but it is probably wise to run them occasionally to circulate the compressor lubricating oils. (Weekly for 10-15 minutes is probably more than enough I will guess).

For cars, they suggest 30 minutes every month. The Aircon in the villa in Spain would be off from around October to May when nobody was out there. Never had any problems with it.
