Well its done it yet again after another freezing night. The pressure only seems to drop to alarm level when its been at freezing point outside. I'll place something over the expansion pipe again.
The pressure is probably dropping because you have an issue with expansion or the prv.
If the vessel is flat the pressure will go up when the boiler is on with the excess water discharging through the prv and it will then stay at a steady high pressure all day until the boiler goes off at night when the system cools and the pressure drops
Put a bag over the end of the discharge pipe outside and see if it fills up
I've put another bag over the pipe outside plus some paper towel in the pipe as an additional indicator. The previous one blew off in the high winds that we had. If and when the bag fills up, I'll check the pressure in the expansion vessel; the Magnaclean is probably due a check anyway.
