As regards the 'special relationship', it has never existed...I have to agree. How much were the 'team' involved in discussions pre the starting of this.
No question mark by intent.
The UK gives and the US takes!
Do tell us where that is true...The other way around too.

Whichever way you look at Trump, the USA are our biggest and most powerful ally
Not anymore at least, and arguably never have been. They are not a reliable or trustworthy ally

We still need them John, it is a fact that our army and Navy are now pretty insignificant on the world stage and both NATO and the US basically prop us up through years of lack of spending, investment and reducing the size of our forces. It is obvious now that this was a bad move, cutting military spending is a false economy.Only when it suits Tangoman Trump.
They are not a reliable or trustworthy ally.
Except to Putin and Netanyahu.
For the time being,
Do tell us where that is true...
Apart from sharing intelligence.
Is this not true? Not anymore at least, and arguably never have been.
Falklands, Suez etc.
I don't disagree with the assertion that 'the special relationship' in whatever form it exists is bigger than presidents and PMs. They come, they go, it is the layers of administration below them that keep things running longer term.Whichever way you look at Trump, the USA are our biggest and most powerful ally that we need to keep on our side, we should have allowed the USA to use our bases on the first phone call and not take 36 hrs, we are reliant on the USA for our military operations as withoutt them we are nothing and that is a fact. NATO is also reliant on the USA, so Trump aside, he will not be here for ever and we need to rebuild that special relationship we held with them. We do not need to comit troops in an attacking role but we do need to do our bit in the defensive roole, that includes keeping the Straits of Hormuz clear for the sake of the worlds economy as it is in our own interest.

I don't think we have any to send, maybe one or two that are operational, we have to keep so many here in any event. Not sure on the actual numbers of ships that we have but if we said 7 or 8, 3 have to be kept here in the UK, 3 operational and 2 in maintenance then it doesnt leave a lot to send out to the straights.I don't disagree with the assertion that 'the special relationship' in whatever form it exists is bigger than presidents and PMs. They come, they go, it is the layers of administration below them that keep things running longer term.
However to me one thing is undoubtedly true. Trump and Netanyahu started this, it's evidently not going the way they assumed it would, and now other countries are being increasingly dragged in.
Ok it can be asserted that's what working in collaboration sometimes means, however Trump doesn't exactly help matters with his rhetoric.
He thought the Strait situation would never arise, thought they'd be in and out before then, now that hasn't happened we're all being asked to send ships. I thought he didn't need our ships?
When it comes to mine sweeper vessels, apparently we have 7. 3 are always kept in our waters for our own security, 3 are in dry dock (surprise surprise) and we apparently had 1 in or near the Gulf that we brought back shortly before the conflict started.I don't think we have any to send, maybe one or two that are operational, we have to keep so many here in any event. Just shows how we rely on NATO and the USA to prop us up, our army and navy used to be the pride of our country at one time, we have reduced this to make us completely insignificant as far as a partner to anyone. When it comes to mine sweeper vessels, apparently we have 7. 3 are always kept in our waters for our own security, 3 are in dry dock (surprise surprise) and we apparently had 1 in or near the Gulf that we brought back shortly before the conflict started.
