Snigger.

Whaddya mean, Eh?
In simple terms:
1.Gov.uk will automatically pay it to everyone over a certain age, regardless of their financial status.
2.If they are not eligible, either they must pay it back or Gov.uk will have to claim it back.
3.That is work for people on both sides.
4.To save that administrative work, those that are not eligible can choose to opt out of receiving it in the first place to save on the hassle of paying it back.
5.That’s what JohnD has done.
6.It’s nothing to do with being altruistic. He's given nothing away. He's just saved himself some paperwork at the end of the financial year.
Gottit now?

I never said you did. You said:
At least with the heating allowance the government provide the means to opt out.
And said what a good egg Johnnyboy was for opting out. I said I don’t believe he'd opted out for the reason he said he had. I believe he opted out to save the aggro of paying it back at the end of the year as he was never eligible for it in the first place. Fek me, you're hard work sometimes.

By 'you' I’m meaning 'the person who it has been paid to'. Obviously it’s not 'you' as 'you' don’t get the heating allowance. Are you being deliberately thick?

However it was generous JD making the point that you can pay it back.
No, he wasn’t. He was making the point that you can opt out of getting it in the first place to save the aggro of paying it back if you’re not eligible. Which he isn’t.

paying double back, given the following year is collected before its paid.

If I received a benefit of £200 that would cost me £300 I think I might fill out a form too.

The missus tells me it was Working Families Tax Credit or some such. It was faffy in terms of declaring it (SE tax) etc and we didn't need it either. To say no to it was like asking to donate a limb.
were you paying yourself and your wife from your business? were either of you earning dividends at the time?
