One of our toilets will not shut off when filling

It is a small cistern with a bottom entry. Current valve is one with a small cup rather than conventional ballcock due to size. It overflows down a pipe to the outside.
Existing one has been in for about 30 years and is in a bad state so not bothering to try and change washers but just go for a new valve.
Question is should I go for a straight replacement or is there a better type of unit now/
