I don’t think the NHS pays for the non-private ones. It’s the local authority that funds them.
I took MBK's:
"The CMA's care homes market study found self-funders paid on average 41% more than local authority-funded residents for the same care"
as suggesting they were in the same place. Otherwise the care can't be "the same" except in gross terms.
My mother was in a private care home. It was "ok" but I wouldn't do it.
The choice of whether to stay at home or not was decided when she could no longer use the loo unaided. It took two people, even though she wasn't big. It becomes either use nappies, or go somewhere with a call button.
She couldn't walk much either, and that got worse so she was eventually bedridden.
Not for me.
You wouldn't put a dog through it, but that's another discussion.
Money really didn't come into the equation. A place costing twice as much would never have made much difference.
She did have private carers at home for a while, but the quality was lousy. There was a huge shortage, at any price.

Mottie's MIL situation is about as grim as it gets, I think
Who would want to be kept alive when things get that bad?
Mother didn't get dementia, but she endlessly repeated the same questions she already knew the answers to, and so on. I didn't spot any enjoyment in life for her. She had a go at the easy crossword, about 2 words, then fell asleep. I was too far away to visit much, my brother had that chore. When she went I was happy to pay him a chunk for doing it - I wouldn't have done as much. She wanted to go but didn't have the means at hand. I'll always make sure I have.
