Another famous line with an echo of history ringing through the subtext: "you shall not pass" is a twist on the words quoted by French General Robert Nivelle as a defiant message (Ils ne passeront pas) to the German Army at the Battle of Verdun. Erich von Falkenhayn aimed to "bleed France white" and his troops gave it a grim nickname to reflect this terrible battle of attrition - the Mill on the Meuse.
Gandalf describes his battle with the Balrog below the Mountains of Moria (on the peak of Zirakzigil), to Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli later in the book saying: “I threw down my enemy, and he fell from the high place and broke the mountain-side where he smote it in his ruin." A line so good it still inspires awe in those who read it for the first time.
After the battle he is no longer Gandalf the Grey; becoming Gandalf the White in an act of transubstantiation sought by druids in their initiation within the secret rites of their order...witch is a tale for another time and place.
