I read a book in the 1970's by Brendan Behan, a noted Irish republican. In that rather Irish orientated book written in the 1950's he made comment that Ireland should be a full part of the British Isles rather than standing alone! Now how that worked with his republican and possibly religious stance I wouldn't like to guess. One could assume that he enjoyed the common travel area; and he was fully aware of the number of Irish participants in the UK during WW2. Clearly with both countries being in the EU that did make a difference easing relations between the 2 nations not that he lived to see it.
