    Wet rot coniophora puteana

Update. So, the roofer stuck a bit of tape across the crack on the roof wall, as a temporary fix. I've left the wall to dry out. I will get another roofer to do a permanent repair. At the end of the summer I will replaster the bit where I hacked off the plaster. That should fix...

Update: I have now borrowed an electric sander, and am waiting for warmer weather so I can take it out in the garden and sand it there. Got my Zinsser!

What would be a fair price?

Thanks for the replies, folks. I was quoted £440. (ten rads) I thought that was high, but I guess that must be a fair price after all. LHL

What would be a fair price?

I'd be grateful if members could tell me what price I ought to pay for this: To carry out a magna filter flush on the central heating system and fit a magna clean professional 28mm filter on the boiler return pipework. To fit a new radiator in a bedroom (removing the old). Customer to...

What happened next was I got a roofer in to find the source of the leak in the roof that caused the damp that caused the mould spores. He removed a bucket or two of moss from the roof and tried to charge me £180, so ladies, before of cowboy con man roofers!

What I meant was, relatively safe, and safer than you were implying. For example, he didn't have to reach it climbing a ladder leaning against the outside wall.

Nige.. It's not ME who has been 'caught out' but the roofer, surely? After all, I didn't pay him, and now, it seems, I won't have to. According to the trading standards officer, I don't have to pay any of the bill. (I will pay him something but not £180.) If you follow that link and read...

I phoned the Trading Standards Helpline and told them the facts of the matter. The advisor said that the price sounds extortionate, and advised me not to pay it without disputing it and making him justify the amount charged. He said I should read his invoice then get quotes from two more...

Many thanks for the replies, gents. To answer some queries... Freddymercurystwin .... I didn't ask him how much, because when I phoned him I asked him to investigate the cause of a leak, not to do any work. Before he went up on the roof, he said he'd go up and take a look, and if it...

Alvo ... I just wanted to say, 15 yrs ago I decorated this entire house all by myself. There are 9 rooms over 3 floors and every skirting, door and window had been stripped. I hate bare wood so it was primer, undercoat and two top coats on 16 windows (mostly box sashes) 15 room doors, 8 cupboard...

I got another quote, from two right rough-looking cheeky chappies, but it was £300. However, they have 9.9 on Checkatrade.... however, I s60tsy's words rang in my ears.... I employed the older guy and he's been here for two days. He's great. Good choice. Job almost finished, very happy with him...

In the 33 years that I have been a lady home owner, I've felt taken for a ride on several occasions. I almost always have already paid, then sat down and thought it through and realised I've been exploited, ripped off and made a fool of. Older and wiser now, I try to be sensible, get quotes etc...

Yes, you are right, I am sorry. I should, of course, always, instantly and without question, do exactly what any internet stranger 5,000 miles away tells me to do, without ever hesitating, double-checking, verifying, asking supplementary questions or getting a second opinion.

The sides and top are very smooth and almost shiny. Better not to risk it. How much sanding, and how hard do I have to rub? What about skimming my electric sander over it? LHL

The Zinsser arrived. I am just steeling myself for having to sandpaper the entire outside of the unit. The prospect of this is horrible. I hate doing it and I hate the dust. Ugh. Gotta be done though, apparently! LHL

Hi Ree Can I just check some things? You write of plaster around the joist tails. There isn't any plaster there. The joists are timber. Where were you expecting to find plaster? The plaster that I have not removed is very sound and won't come off without a really good bash. Are you...
